  • Is it me in the wrong here.

I was out on the boat for 20mins when th prop got snagged on rope.

The marker for the pots must of had 15 - 20 foot of rope drifting on the surface.

I steered away from the bouy (no dan) but still got caught up in the drifting rope.

I mean the same area had crab pots marked with a plastic bottle, another skipper who camme to my aid said the person who put them out might of well laid traps, they were that poorly marked.

Is this my lack of experience or are som people irresponsible?

Allways keep down tide or downside from the wind if the tide is slack with any markers of any bouy or marker and you would normally be safe from picking anything up that is the golden rule.

Its the same around the Tyne, i caught a rope just outside the piers around the prop and was lucky it came off with the use of the gaff and that pot was marked with a 6 pint milk container about 30 yards away from the main route into the Tyne.

Pots and fishing dont mix as they pot the same areas we wish to fish but we both dont have claim and have to share the area, alittle bit better marked pots would help and you often see them being checked off Colourcoats.

This is a big problem throughout the uk coastline, its ok saying pass downwind to the pot markers(thats if they have marker Dans displays)but at night its impossible to see them anyway.
A lot of harbour authorities now give out rules to local crab/lobster boats as to use correct markers and correct floating gear used.
Keeping clear of fairways and harbour entrances should be the norm but its not always the case.
Last year on a return trip to Whitehaven from Dublin I picked up a pot marker it was a black flag so at 3am I couldn't see it anyway. The weather was very poor with a southwest near gale but I had jib sail and reefed main so could sail into Whitehaven.
I now have fitted a rope cutter ambassador stripper 3 bladed job not cheap but well worth it when you pick up floating lines.
Was tested this year on a trip to Isle of Whithorn, motorsailing on a still day engine slowed then picked up again on drying out at the isle harbour found a hessian sack and rope cut into pieces but still covering the prop, still had forward movement but only about halfspeed.
Without the cutter would have been a call for help.
