Boat Fishing off Filey Brigg ?

Hi,
hello to everyone. I am new to the forum, live in Yorkshire but have always kept my boat in North Wales and fished the Lleyn Peninsular. I was put off fishing the north sea for many years due to declining catches but have now decided to bring my boat home and give the north sea another try. She is a 15ft sea jeep with a 30hp Suzuki engine. Weather permitting, I am hoping to Launch from Filey Brigg on Weds 12 Sept. I am told I can launch on the 4hp aux motor. My question is does anyone have any tips on where to fish within a couple of miles of that radius as it is all new territory to me, bait, lures etc? I have gps and a fishfinder. In Wales I have traditionally fished for the usual pollock and mackerel, caught a few sea bass and some quite large tope but I suspect the north sea will be somewhat different! Any advice greatly appreciated and should anyone contemplate fishing the Lleyn peninsular I can give plenty of advice back.

alrite mate, and welcome cant really help u a do get out regular with one of the other members on his boat and have had some crackin catches, and theres plenty lads on here get out so a would say there should be a few people on here that'll give u some advice hav a look at some older posts and reports using the search at top of page

Well, found wreck coordinates for Malvina, drove on to beach, took one look at the sea and came home! BBC forecast was slight to moderate but it certainly didn't look that way to me. North sea wins again......:

Slight to moderate is no good in a boat your size a moderate sea in much larger boats anit very nice dont go above slight but then again its allways worth a look at the sea before you decide to launch.

Hi Richard and welcome to NESA, we don't have a lot of people from your area that own their own boats. I know we have one but not sure if he is working away at the moment, that is probably why he hasn't replied to your thread. There do seem to be more weeks when the boat lads can't get out than when they do though due to wind directions.

I would imagine the inshore fishing would usually be quite good off the Lleyn peninsular? That said I am probably just thinking about the type of fish you mentioned which always cunjure up exciting fishing lol. I would guess there would be a lot of Dogfish that way too? It was always an area that I fancied trying from the shore but never got around to trying.

Thanks for replies, and yes, Jim, the Irish sea is full of doggies. In fact they are a bit of a nuisance. Had some quite large Bull Huss though and we had several decent tope last year. My lad had one of 50 lbs plus, 500 metres out in 30m depth which took 45 mins to land off Porth Ysgaden where we usually launch (for free) although this year we couldn't get out that much due to catching the tail end of several hurricanes. He did get a 9lb pollock though fishing around yellow rock ( known as Maen Melt on a map). It is a geat place to fish but there are some incredible tides to contend with at times. If you want to see what its like log on to the Ty Coch webcam which is a pub right on the beach selling the dearest beer in Britain, although the location is superb. If there are any caravenners or campers out there I can recommend a brilliant site right on the coast where you can rock fish straight in to deep water and there is a guy on site who sells really cheap decent fishing tackle and every bait you could need.
Haven't given up on the North Sea yet though, I can still remember what a cod looks like from my fishing trips out of Brid as a kid !!

Filey brigg is not an area I have fished for 20 years, I launched my first boat from the beach there, but could I suggest you have a look at the NESFC website.

They recently did a fish survey which detailed different types of ground and what they caught. It may give you some ideas of the ground. I cant find that report on the website but if you PM me an email address I will send you a copy.

and scroll to "angling report 2006" May find something of intrest in there.

I do know that reighton bay/filey bay is noted for bass and just a bit further south off Flamborough I had one of my best days tope fishing ever in Sept. Eleven fish in under two hours...thats when the BBC crew said they had to go in to catch a train!

Have a look at other launch sites a bit further south , particularly south beach Bridlington and there used to be a launch at south landing flambrough. If you try the Brid launch make sure your insurance flares firextinguisher are all spot on cos the guy who runs the launch is a propper jobsworth ( which is putting it politely ). The large shallow bank between Brid and flamborough is certainly worth a shot in August and sept for Tope. Its only 20 or so feet deep in places but well worth fishing.

I always find it strange that only 120 miles further down the coast or so and the range of speices is so different to up here. Cant remember tope from our ports, not many rays and such either.

I type this after a 11hr nightshift as i am getting dressed to take the Stingray out for a 10hour trip...must be mad 34 hours with no kip and off fishing
