Eventually got out on a boat this year, lovely evening, calm sea, decent bunch of lads on the boat.

Tried for mackerel first in 2 or 3 places no luck, then moved from wreck to wreck. Nothing doing in the first hour then a few small pouting, a codling and a pollock were scattered among those fishing.

To be fair to the skipper he did say it had been hard going during the day to find any fish and we must have tried at least 10 spots.

Finally on the way back in we stopped over what was probably some rough ground out from the piers and one of the lads got a decent cod of probably around 5lb possibly better.

I personally would have prefered to spend more time drifting over this ground than spend more than half the time steaming around from wreck to wreck. For a short fishing session it felt like we hardly had our tackle in the water.

Last time on a boat we caught more better fish half a mile out from blyth pier in half an hour than we did all day cruising around.

I am certainly not trying to criticise Tony as he came across as a decent bloke and was there in a flash as soon as anyone got snagged or had a problem. If I had caught a monster from one of the wrecks then this report would have been considerably different. Skippers cant force fish onto hooks and can only get you to where fish ought to be.

I am trying to get out again sometime soon and would certainly try Mistress again, possibly a full day if I can fit it in.

    Jonny ( boat catches this year 1 pouting 1lb 1 whiting .5lb )

As far as I know there are still some around they just seem a bit harder to find. The skipper told me it took one and a half hours during the day to find a shoal. It is getting on for the end of the season.

The mistress does seem to have a good turn of speed. Cant wait to get back out. Really want at least one good fish this year.
