Home early after jumping ship so to speak for a false call as the mrs thought she was in labour with the new edition. During the three weeks away we were called to assisist a 28ft catemeran that had lost steerage to the east of Rattray head. When she reported in to the coastguard the sailor was worried she would capsize as she was beam on to the seas and it was a good force 9! Here's a couple of photo's taken from our bridge wing as we tried to give her a lee as she sorted out a jury rig.




We were going to attempt to tow her but the lifeboat was called out and towed her to peterhead safely.
Just saw that PM Davem, I apologise mate, I didn't see it. Once this new edition is here and all calm has been restored I'll give you a tinkle to get off fishing.

ahh rattray head, been there done that - with no steering as well and the conditions look about the same too, loved every minute of it, can't speak for the crew though, think Ell's about recovered, not seen hide or nor hair of the other one since!

its a real snotty piece of work is rattray head, 3 tides collide over a big reef and the sea comes away in every direction, or so it seems anyway. We were getting bounced from arsole to breakfast, one minute the front end submarining several feet into a sea, then one gets you from the side (thats when the lemon and tea bags went awol) then you're surfing as one takes you from behind


not a good place to get stuck, that bottom pic is a cracker though,I'm sure the skipper would dearly love that one stuck on his wall. from a yottie perspective that handkerchief sized bit of headsail says it all

I dotn think i would go on a boat again if i was stuck out in that sea...i have a real fear how powerfull the sea is and respect it so much.

believe it or not that sea is not as rough as it gets - when in the navy on the invincible we had to hide behind an island off scotland and a major exercise cancelled due to waves that were far too big for an aircraft carrier. Scary stuff.

you are right about the respect thing tho.

not the same carrier (this one is american) but to show the sea is massize the flight deck of this would be around 80-90ft from normal flat sea level, the invincibles deck was over 60 feet from the sea level and we had waves just rolling down the deck.

jason reminds me of uncle albert in only fools, when in the navy, lol my nephews in navy now only 20 been in since left school loves it, tried some monkfish once off him as got it free when there docked a trawler out at sea for quota on the vessel

In my career at sea I have only been scared once Ivan. That was in the South Atlantic on passage from the Falklands to South Georgia. We didn't even make the antarctic convergence zone before we got battered to say the least! The whole ship was covered in 2 feet of ice and we couldn't turn around for 5 days! You were stood on the bridge looking up at huge greenies! We lost all comms, lost the rescue boat and did loads of damage to the ship, they had nimrods out looking for us at one point. The ship was only small as well 74m. South Georgia was great and I would love to go again but on a bigger boat!

Yer i been out in some seas not so much in my boat but others and had the fear of the sea well respect would be a better word from a young age...i dont take chances at sea.

Bloody hell sounds like you were obviously wondering if you would make it!!

my first time ever on a coble took me five years ever to get back on another boat, total bad it was no life gear on boat at all was only about 14, saying that when i was 20 still was same cowboys operating in all weathers, again advertised in sea angler licsenced and insured for 12 what bollox, what was is liferaft his anker? laugh now but never again how they got away with it was joke, stiill thingk now in sea angler lic and ins for 12 , in brackets if ya daft enough we were them days

Good pics Graham,yes out in a F9 off Rattray head is not a place anyone
wants to be.....and I mean anyone..

And with steering gear failure makes the situation a lot worse,in conditions
like that.The skipper on board would be concerned of capsize especially in a small catamaran
