The ling fishing has been good but what an array of quality cod.
Your noit wrong the amount of ling between 4 and 8lb is unreal when the weather lets you get a bait down.
As for cod, well i been thinking they just about vanished, had 4 double cod in June but none since, seems like they moved down your way
The wrecks to the south of whitby have produced the bigger cod they seem to still hold the cod this time of year as those to the north of whtby spring is the best time for those wrecks the tides are now big takeing the inshore wrecks out of play you only get a short window to fish towards slack water maneged to find another 2 better cod last week before the winds started. Those cracking cod just keep comeing - World Sea Fishing Forums
Yer i cant give ling away as its not "cod" and also i hate with a total passion cleaning a ling as its so bloody hard to hold and do.
I put every fish back that is alive apart from maybe 1x 3-4lb cod per trip, have done since mid-June.
Unless its looking like a cod from the ship shop no one wants them and i hate doing them anyway so its win win for em and the fish
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY MORE INFO REGARDING "LING" LIVING AFTER YOU PUT A SMALL HOLE IN THE BLADER? i put over 70 back this year by putting a pin prick in the swim blader and hate to think i only sent them down for a slow death.

If you prick the gullett which pops out of there mouths they will allmost certainly die what you see if is there stomach lineing if you prick the gullett and let the air out of the fish it actually drowns when it goes back down i did it myself for quite a few years myself not knowing thinking it would be ok but i found out they drown when you do this it is such a shame with ling as at least 50% have there gullett out of there mouths when you bring them up to the surface some go straight back down when released but unfortunatly a lot dont some are past it when you bring them up you might as well keep them as the birds only peck hell out of them on the surface before they die.
Yer thats what i was thinking, like i say i cant give them away so even if i kept them they would be wasted.
Such a shame, good job its about a 50/50 split so far this year with cod and ling but seems like the ling are going to take over for next few weeks of the season as per.
It may be possible to return blown ling with a device used in Australia. It is a lead weight with a big 9/0 barbless hook sticking out of the top of it. The idea is to hook the ling through the top lip with the hook point protruding into the fishes mouth. The weight is attached to a rod and line at the hook shank and lowered to the seabed which recompresses the bladder. The weight when retreived will unhook the fish.
I have thought about getting one made, but I am also convinced the fish will die anyway. I saw an American report years ago which said any fish with a swim bladder would die if caught and returned in depths in excess of 90ft.
I'd be very surprised is Ling isn't sometimes passed off as "Cod" in some places
What I do is cut fillets in half and trim them to look like a "normal" fillet...the people that take the fish off me never notice the difference
Ooh a new vid!
