  • a day out on shanka

me and my son paul finally got out on sun 14th, we left royal quays at 4.30 am. first stop was just outside the piers where nothin was doin, moved a bit further north and paul hit our first mackerel of the year on orange muppets
he caught two at the same time then that was it! another move further north in between tynemouth and cullercoats brought the first cod for me using squid on a flowing trace, we had a couple more small cod ( 2/ 3 lbs)
we kept going over the same drift as we were getting bites quite ofte but not hitting them, about 8-00 am i struck into a fish which didnt come up straight away and put up a bit of a fight. a few minutes later i was over the moon to land my best ever cod at 8lb,with five cod in the boat i decided to have a go with a light spinning rod and a krill lure, first drop i had a mackerel then second drop at mid depth i hit a cod of about 3lb, paul copied and we both hit a cod each third drop we did it again a cod each in mid water, we ended the day with 10 cod to keep and few put back, we were amazed that we almost doubled our catch by switching to the mackerel gear!! by the way i reccomend any one to try using light gear with a single lure for the mackerel a good fish will give a good scrap and can make a days fishing a lot more fun
