  • Soon to be new boat owner

All being well me and a mate John should be getting our first boat end of May beginning June (Predator 165) and we’ll be keeping her at the Royal Quays. All the excitement makes me remember Christmas as a kid!

So now we have to start thinking about the sensible things like insurance and sundries - fenders, life jackets for kids, RYA courses etc.
If anyone has any practical tips they would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Get those bearing saver things for the trailer and make sure you have a hose and attachments to flush the engine and wash the trailer/under the car after every single trip.

Learn how to use the gps inside out...the better you are at this the better your fishing will be and less time you'll spend staring at the screen trying to figure it out instead of catching.

        Good luck!

Try "covermyboat" for your insurance , you can do it all online and they are very competitive. If your new boat is second hand it'll probably come with a lot of the bits and bobs , if it's new there are a load of "little" things that add up to quite a few quid to add to her , like as you say , fenders and life jackets , but also the ropes for the fenders ,mooring ropes, anchor ropes ,anchor , vhf radio, fish finder , chartplotter, rod holders, compass and probably a few more things I've forgotten about , can't have too much/many ropes
I've got an explorer elite , very similar to the predator , you will love it

sorry TAG forgot to mention flares you will need these as well. When you buy them check the expiry date, you should be looking for a minimum of 2012

I was in your position 3 years ago and also keep my boat at Royal Quays, she is called Iris M. Firstly you will not be allowed into Royal Quays without insurance so you must get it. I am insured through Nautical Insurances services who are very reasonable on price. I often take my boat up my caravan on the west coast of Scotland so she is fully insured whilst on the trailer, will your boat be in and out of the water as this type of detail needs to go on the insurance schedule. You will defiantly need fenders 1 to protect your boat while tied to the pontoon and 2 all the other boats that you will at some time have to tie off to when waiting on a lock out or lock in. You will need a radio as you will need to talk to Royal Quays to get in and out and in case of emergencies. Life jacket are a must and not just for the kids, I bought mine off the net £45 self inflating. And finally deep pocket as boating doesn’t come cheap but is great fun. Hope to see you in the marina, say hello.
