Few questions...(as I've got a bulk order coming in LOL)

Do people prefer them with lead heads or plain on hook?

On Long Traces or Short traces?

Reading the books and mags the "classic" method is on huge flowing traces...but I've read a couple of other sources that have used 3 foot to good effect

How do people round these parts fish them

Twin tails beat shads hands down in my past experiance, i like a small 2oz lead for the head running off a boom with 2 swivels, one at each end then a weak link from the bottom of the boom to the 6oz lead.

Fav colours, Orange, white and Blue

Had a few on lumi and black but not in numbers.

Nice long 3ft trace i use and fish them when you stotting along, if up and down i reduce the lenght of snood to help reduce snags and have more contact with your hook for the take.

I remember being laughed at when a few of us started using these ont he charter boats many years ago...now its the norm.

Caught a nice Pollack last year on a flowing trace with a side of Macky which was intended for Ling - got me thinking about trying to catch a few more this year

i would say that shads out fish twin tails - use the storm ones or if feeling flush use the tempest sidewinders, do not use a boom of any sort but a 3-5ft length of 20lb flourocarbon with a quality mini swivel on one end and a gemini link swivel clip on the other just put your lead on your swivel clip on end of your main line and put the little clip above that with the chad clipped on the other end, either fish on light gear giving between 2 to 15 turns of the reel (depending where the cod are) or fish hopper style if drifting at over 1.5kts by just lifting and lowering the rod 6 feet while keeping the shad bouncing off the bottom, do not strike on the take but keep winding.

I have been out twice this week just a couple of miles and abck in with out dropping a line.

If weather holds i am off Friday so will have 2-3hrs close in..the bug has hit now.

Seen a few new boats in the mariner today, spent a few hours having a clean up/paint and look around...feel i have to spend at least a few hours a week messing about down ther euntil the fish come in after the bill landed on the door step on Friday lol

Had a look at Slinky today, not much build up of weed Norman and looking ready to go already.

Jason, you know with the retrieve, what speed do you use? Is it a blast up or just a slow steady retreive? I am still sceptical about shads and fish with them for twenty minutes(or less if I get fast it which is usually the case!) at most then switch back to the old fave flowing trace with a big muppet above a pennel rig baited with crab or lug or even a bit of razor as I know this always works. Again with the weighted shads and lures do they not tend to get hung up all the time or at least more regular?
With our new faster boat we hope to try a bit more lure fishing on the wrecks off Amble and try and stick with them for longer than 20 minutes! Me and micky said last season we were going to have a trip off and ban bait to ensure we fished with lures all day, it didn't materialise though! Old habits die hard!
I suppose the tackle losses on a wreck might be a bit lower than the ground we normally fish ( rough as a badgers!hauxley, hadston and creswell skeers) due to the mud and soft ground surrounding the wreck?

i usually experiment with the retrieve and i can honestly say with the slightly weighted shads that if you ensure that you lower to the sea bed in a controled way with the shad down tide of the lead i have only had a hand full of hang ups or tangles in 4 years of using shads - used to happen all the time with a boom in the equation, it was Paul Kilpatrick the skipper of sea otter in whitby that showed me the current set up and the difference was unreal. in the summer i only use mackeral/squid as bait but normally fish the plastics and with the odd pirk in the bag for emergencies. as long as you are drifting you can use the shad on the rough ground too, keeping it on the move just over the bottom.

Hi all, this is my first time on the forum and i would like to echo what jason mentioned about shad type,trace length and set up. I fished out of whitby on sea otter 2 last thursday and absolutely hammered them, i will post a catch report in the relevant section.
