Thats a great price for that plotter, Me and Micky might be in need of one for our new boat as the one we have has an internal antena and we aren't sure if the signal it needs will be strong enough when it is console mounted under the cuddy. It's not too big a hit to take for one of those, thanks for posting that,
After ringing up to ask about it the bloke told me the price but in addition it is£100 for the required area chart or £130 for the whole of the UK. Still a good deal,
any chartplotter you buy, you'll have to buy the charts on top, often a few on ebay though
as for the internal aerial plotter not working. One of the ploters we've got on pansy (a cobra one) has an internal aerial, and workd perfectly, picks up satellites in no time at all and never misses a beat.
and that's mounted inside a very big, very solid wooden wheelhouse
might be worth giving it a go??

Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs
Yes Mark, we are going to give it a go to see if the signal is strong enough, we were thinking of another means of position fixing anyway just in case as double redundancy is alway better and makes you feel a bit safer if the fog comes down. The plotter we have at the minute which we took off Nefin is also a Garmin but a combined plotter and echosounder.
With the new plotter sorted its only a new 50hp outboard we need to find the cash for now, and of course the marina fees which are due in March!
Graham.
The internal works ok, i have a 555 and it works no bother with the internal, i already had the conection for the extrenal so run it off that but i could easy remove it off the roof and run it on the internal.
My chartplotter has an internal aerial and works inside the cuddy inside the garage , I was a bit unsure whether an internal aerial would work under a cuddy too when I was looking to buy one , the specs tell you it has to be open to the sky or something along those lines, but they work fine under a cuddy.
No doubt in my mind that he external will be better but if your working with limited funds i so far have not had mine flacker when i have ran it off the internal, granted if it ever did i just have to plug in the aerial and away i go.
Ive got the Garmin 172 had no bother what so ever excellent piece of kit. never bothered with the charts the base map is adequate for me. just a case of marking spots and heading to them never go out that far to need navigation.
