I always felt that casting up tide with a grip lead was most idealy suited to quite clean ground and keep your bait anchored to the bottom. In rough ground, lot more chance of solid fast holds.
The anglers nearest to the bow of the boat should cast the furthest up tide if there are six rods a side, then the next angler down a little less, and so on down each side of the boat.
In theory,
that all sounds good, but with big bows in the lines, once someone has pulled in, problems can easily set in
The main thing is, it means a dozen anglers can fish at anchor without all the baits streeming out the back of the boat.P.B. Cod 30lb-11ozs Balcary.

The idea of uptiding was originally boats fishing in very shallow water with a big riptide going past and to keep your line away from the boat the noise from boat in the tide was supposed to frighen the fish are quite sure about that.
I would say its 98% downtiding which is done on my vessel especially if you are fishing very hard ground boulders etc gear loss and fish loss is massive if you cast uptide as soon as your breakaway is broken by a fish very often you get jammed up so it a lot easyer to go downtide snags a lot less and getting fish jammed up a lot less .
The main reason casting away from the boat at slightly different angles spreads the lines out and widens the scent trail just out of curiosity i have seen the majority of big cod caught uptiding on sea-otter 2 where lads have just dropped down makes a can make a bit of a difference in your fishing when you cast downtide as you putting your bait away from everybody elses but the main thing is to spead the lines for less tangles etc .
