  • Outboard running funny

    Was out the other day in the boat and the outboard was playing up a bit, nothing drastic but annoying.
    Think myself it may be water in the fuel or codensation. As I opened up the engine to get it on the plane it was running slow then gaining then running slow all for a slit second as if it was missing, did get better as the day went on. the engine itself was lifting slightly as it slowed which i put down to the backwash as it slowed.
    On tick over it was fine and started no bother. even on a steady run at around 6mph it was fine. Just wondering if anyone out there has had the same bother.
    The mixture was correct

    Its a 25hp mariner 2006 2 stroke and its not a big problem but just annoying at the time.

    sounds to me like the fuel and oil mix is wrong mate as this has happened to me before i still just wack the oil into the fuel can lol

      If the air screw on the tank is not fully open you get the same symptoms as you need more and more suction to pull the fuel through. As the engine slows and less fuel is required, the air pressure in the tank has time to stabilise before you start sucking hard again so creating a partial vacuum in the tank and less fuel flow.
      Make sure the air screw is fully out on the tank.

          otherthing is i wouldnt mind finding someone who could take a look at my engine and maybe service it depending on price (its a evinrude 40 1981)

            wouldnt worry about the price of a service, I would worry more when it broke down out at sea because you didnt get it serviced. Your life, your kids lifes may well depend on a reliable engine. In fact have two reliable engines.

                something iffy in the fuel line somewhere I reckon. under the carbs theres a brass nut to drain the carb bowls crack it open and pump the primer bulb to flush out anything in the carbs and have a look at what you get out if you can catch it in a clean container (aerosol lids are good!)

                could also be the rubber diaphragm int he fuel pump getting a bit tired as well

                PA Lynch at Morpeth have always worked wonders on engines I've taken to them for servicing and they're reasonably priced as well
