wrecks on fish finders

Has anyone fished the 2 wrecks about 4 mile north east of coquet island think there called the somalia and hornchurch. I had the mark set on my plotter but found nothing on the fisfinder I'm sure there in right, do these wrecks show up as much on the fishfinder.

the wreck index has the following on the olimpia:

Steel Fishing Trawler 36.57m x 6.55m x 3.5m
registered: grimsby
3 Cyl triple expansion engine 66hp

"This fishing trawler was captured by a german submarine, her crew forced to abandon ship without loss of life, after which she was sunk by gunfire. Wreck lies in a general depth of 44m"

sank 3m E of Coquet Island 08/04/1916

so I guess she wasn't a huge ship in the first place and 100 years nearly on the bottom she'll be well broken up, so might need a bit of sniffing about to find her. sometimes if a wreck is well dispersed it doesn't stande very high off the sea bed, so if there's a bit of swell or chop it can be hard to spot on the finder among the peaks and troughs on the bottom caused by the boat moving about a bit, migh be worth waitinf for a flat calm day and having a mooch about to see if you can spot it and re-mark it on the plotter

There was a fair swell on today I'll double check the co ords then wait for the calmness. First time ive been that far out with the boat, fingers crossed for the next time.

The marks from dive sites tend to be right but that one is quite small.

Dont forget that the faster the boat travels the smaller the lump on the screen. This is because most modern finders scroll the picture on by one pixel for every echo they recieve .Older finders have a scroll speed setting so set this to its highest setting to get the longest image. That boat at only just over 6 metres wide would appear as minor blip on the screen in you cross it at more than a couple of knots.

If your plotter supports "grayline" bottom definition ( or whatever else they may call it) ...set this to a high sensitivity so it indicates when you pass over wreckage laid flat on the bottom and tells you when you are in the right area.

I always use split screen mode with 2x set in one window to give detail and normal mode in the other. The normal mode window is showing more of the ground you have passed over and makes it easier to spot gentle rises. It is also usefull to spot large wrecks when you are
actually on top of them and the detail window is showing a flat bottom which is actually the deck or hull of the wreck.

found a bit more about the olympia - 221 tons gross weight.

most of here is collapsed, the boiler and engine still stand upright surrounded by a mound of broken steel plates and machinery, and part of the bow section is reasonably intact still, max height above the sea bed is 2 to 3metres but changes often as strong tidal streams can build up sediment around her or strip it away

co-ords given are N55 22 110 W001 28 450

We went out to a wreck 3 miles east of coquet island a few weeks back , the sea was flat and so was the sea bed right up until we went over where the wreck showed on the plotter , then a tiny mound appeared on the screen. We found two more just like it on the way back , small but obvious mounds on the otherwise flat sea bed. I can't imagine such a small structure would hold many fish and even if it did hold some , it would be very difficult to drift over with any sort of accuracy. I notice on Ucina there are two different kinds of wreck marked i.e. "safe" wrecks and "dangerous" wrecks , the one we went out to was deemed a safe one , I'm off to find some dangerous ones next time ......... unless someone wants to tell me which ones to fish out of Amble?

its surprising that sometimes the littlest bit of wreck can hold plenty fish and the big hulks not many at all

Fished the 2 wreck marks about 3 mile east of the island with nowt but small whiteys and macky. Found nowt on the finder but as you say they must be that small that it would be difficult to get an accurate drift.

I would also like to know of any wrecks that have fished well of Amble, I would also like to get 6 numbers up as well !!!

I'm going wreck hunting soon George , there are loads within about 8 miles of Amble (not necessarily straight out to sea ) If and when I find any with fish on them I'll give you the co-ordinates. I've looked at charts with wrecks on them and on the dive sites etc. but the charts just say "wreck" which could mean the titanic or a rowing boat lol. I've got some co-ordinates off a dive site for some bigger / more recent wrecks but I havn't put them in my plotter yet to see how far away they are. It's great fun exploring and finding it all out , but a bit frustrating when the weather is pants and we can't get out to them. Hopefully we'll get some nice calm days when we can zoom around from wreck to wreck and check a few out

Hiya George, We have been down to Creswell a few times so far this season and have found the North Skeer on a flood tide the best by far, Try the Northern Hills on your way down as you might go past the fish, I am out on Sunday morning so might see you about,

Whats the Northern hills never heard of that. Do you have any co ords for it trying to get a few marks into me new plotter. Ive got the skeers at cresswell in copied them off a chart.

I'll not be out sunday its usualy midweek I'm out due to me shifts but I'll keep an eye out.
