Few questions...

1. Why is it a treble hook (traditionally) and not a a larger single hook?
2. Why Split rings?...why not tie on with mono and thus act as a weak(ish) link so that only the hook is lost and not the whole lot?
3. Do people prefer muppeted hooks or plain?

Treble= Due to the movment of the pirk, it is often missed by the stricking fish..treble hooks are added to the pirks to increase the chance of the fish sticking when it has hit the lure.

Split rings= no reason really can use what you wish, idea is to keep hook as close as the pirk end as possible to increase hit-hook up ratio

Muppet= i dont bother, end of the day if they not attracted to a big pirk, a little muppet not going to help alot but upto everyone what they use.

Treble= they are used so the angler can get snagged on the wreck easier and loose more gear, used a single 6/0 on jiggers for many many years and have caught as many if not more fish than the anglers on the boat with me. Keep it simple.

Split rings+ a devise for attaching hook to jiggers wheteher round or ovel, I prefered oval

Muppets= an angler that ignores the advice of the skipper when he is not catching any fish and others are. Also another means of catching fish attached to the line about two to three feet above the jigger. A single muppett will do, no ned to drop down a whole string, you will only help in adding to more gear on the wreck. even the smallest lure will catch fish, remeber on one trip a lad was down to his last daylight, fishing with that and a plain lead he caught the biggest two fish 23lb & 27lb, on the boat.

I dont use trebles on my pirks Tony mate,single hooks,its easier to pull free from a snag that way,also i use a weak link between pirk and hook,had no problems with that set up

try a 10/0 single for the pirk

and at least an 8/0 for the muppets/hokis

Well, I rarely get out on a boat, think the last time was one of the NESA friendly comp's back around 2004! But whichever way you go, the one thing I did note that seemed to increase hits resulting in fish was to set the pirk up with hooks top and bottom.

have wondered about this...the new craze of "jigging" relys on a hook on the top of the pirk and they call this an "assist" hook...as far as I can make out they don't seem to put a hook on the bottom most of the time

Course it looks bonkers daft in comparison to fishing with a pirk N/East stylee...just have to look at those dafty Ozzies to see how much effort they put into it...

Tony, when i was knee high to a dinghy's gunnell , the old timers used to fish their rippers (pirks) with two hooks fixed with orange corline / cat gut via a hole drilled halfway up the ripper, so they were dangling at each side of the pirk. If the cod attacked the pirk from the side , you had him, if he took from below it was usually through the lip, but with the the more forgiving way of fishing then, with greenheart/cane rods & scarborough reels,we diddn't loose too many fish.. .
