  • Best rod for shading

I just wonderd what would be a good rod for shading that would give the shad the right kind of action. I feel the rods that i use are not giving the lure the right movemen in the water.
Just thought I would ask you lads what rod yous use and why you prefer and why.

A longer 4-10oz uptider does the business for me. You can get a long sweeping draw of the lure which can be deadly on its day. 50lb fluro leader.

I rarely use my shorter boat rods nowadays and the longer rod cushions any dives using braid.

I like the ugly sticks I have 2 ugly sticks boat rods already but they dont seem to work the shads very well, the GX 12-20LB would probably have a better action and not as stiff as my two.
Thanks for your reply tight lines matety

            agree

got the new GX 12-20 and love it.

Even pulled a 17lb cod up in 55m water on Sunday. Beautiful action, feels like a 200£ rod

However, I managed to break my 2013 Ugly Stik Braid in the middle !! So all their bragging about unbreakable blanks seems exaggerated...and no, I did nothing unusual, was stuck to the wreck and tried to shake it out

been using the new diawa saltist braids rods last two seasons and i reckon they are the best rods i have ever used - the 12-20 class are perfect for our waters. no need to go heavier. Gave all my ugly sticks away - they really feel old school after trying the new saltists.
Gotta say though Chukkas idea of using a good uptider is probably spot on... I might try breaking out my abu suveran uptider this weekend...

Strange that you mention it, but I have the same rod as well.

I like the saltist a lot and it is my principle rod on the wrecks for almost everything. Beautiful action and that lovely elastic stiffness which is needed to play a shad.

However...since I have the 2014 Ugly stik GX, I cannot make up my mind which one I like better...but surely I like both better than the Fladen maxximus where everytime I use it another eye comes lose....shocking build quality

I was out Sunday 8am on the Delta Barbara, sadly the shads did nothing for me but baited hokkies got me three nice keepers 5lb 7lb and a 9lb cod along with a few ling and the usual maccy, everyone onboard had a good stamp of fish I was impressed with the The Ugly Stick GX 2 great bit of kit as it brought all the fish off the wreck no problem at all.
Thanks to you all for recommending the rod to me. Happy days

I brought mine to the dealer and Shakespeare replaced it. They seem to be quite generous, because they call the Ugly Stik unbreakable...

Thats why I now buy rods in the tackle shop!
