We once went out from Cullercoats at 10.00 at night (so we could see the pot dans) in the middle of summer. Bloke who had the boat (Brian Manson) had just got red and green lights for a present so we gave it a go. Fished the High Point Hotel, about piers open and, spookily Mark, we caught fewer fish than in the day but I had the best at about 12lb. We fished what we always fished - black lug and peeler. Might have influenced things I suppose. We came ashore around 04.30 (so we could see the pot dans lol).

          Remember it being jolly cold.

Alan I never knew about the ammo at the railway, always thought it was coal. The number of times I've scratched a few coins from around the wooden staithes with the trowel............Amazing I haven't gone off bang! Another question then - anyone know what happened to the big red mine that used to be outside the Gibraltar Rock? It was used as a money box for a charity (old sea dogs perhaps) but don't know what happened to it.

Mebbes Livebaits might be a killer too...prawns, sandeels, crabs (not peelers), small foodchain type fish...

Once did an allnight boat session on the East coast of Scotland and at this time of year as well. Was drift fishing for codling over rocky ground. Used the usual baits. We caught fish until it got dark, then absolutely nothing during the dark. When dawn came up we started to catch fish again. If its cod your after, might be hit or miss on the drift. If I was doing it again, I would be tempted to anchor a wreck. Might even be worth a static bait for a conger.

                  night shift

i think this would be a great idea anchoring up over night for conger as not many people have tried this on the north east coast. Using big cuttlefish baits, i have read a few reports that divers frequently see big conger in the wrecks off our coast, definitely worth a try i reckon.
target of 10 codling this season and gonna try for a pig!!!!1

                  Cheers Justin

I think the old mine is outside the watchhouse (now the museum). I went to view one of the lifeguard cottages the other week (couldn't swing a spratt in the place!) & I'm sure it was there,'cos was wondering where it went myself, I think its black now as opposed to the red & white I remember as a lad.

Cheers John, yes I remember it being red. Also remember thinking how big it seemed compared to those in the films.

                        Night Fishing

The bridlington boats used to do night trips and they all tried drifting but when there is no daylight it was pointless so they used to anchor wrecks and thats when bait fishing came alive some of the best ling have been caught on night trips and anchoring just up tide of the wreck and trotting baits back towards the wreck produces realy well
