a question for all with own boats

is there ment to be a pin in the tilt part of the outboard
weve bought a new engine and it dont lock close to the boat ect (it has the locking pin to lock engine up while towing ect) its while in use does it need to sit on a pin to stop the engine bouncing up while under power ect ect all info appreciated

if so where could a pin be bought ???

an engine won't bounce up will going forward as its pushing itself against the transom, but can pull it self up out of the water in reverse if not locked down

there should be mechanism to lock it down though. there's usually a horizontal pin which is used for trimming the motor and the leg clips it self onto that when its down unless its power tilt when the pressure in the trim pump holds it in place

what engine is it I might have a manual with a pic

i hav a mercury i thought that as well but it has a horizontal bar that goes through the holes on the bracket it dont lock in when going forward but soon as it is in reverse it lockes over the top of the bar to stop it lifting

it has the locking mechanisim but no pin
its a yamaha 30 hp marc all i know
anywhere i can get the pin ? or could one be made

I've got most yam manuals as pdf's but there's a lot of 30hp motors! any idea of the year?

either way sounds like the trim pin is missing, you could just make one. either threaded stainless rod the right size for the holes and a lock nut on each end, or plain stainless rod drilled with a wee hole at each end for a split pin or R clip.

must be stainless though, if you use normal mild steel, even after a couple of trips it will have rusted enough to have reacted with the alloy of the outboards mounting bracket and be almost impossible to remove, unless you remove it after every trip and rinse/oil it

thats if its the bit I'm thinking of!

normally its just a pice of stainless rod, 90 degree bennd at one end to stop it going all the way through, and a clip at the other which folds to keep it in place

im not certain of the year as its on back of the boat in my mates yard lol

nearly all outboards have exactly the same design of pin, so shouldn't be too hard to find one. just stick some threaded bar in to get you going, the only time you really need it is if you go backwards to quickly. had an old johnson that tried to do helicopter impressions if you slammed it into reverse to quickly

on the plus side with that engine though, I used to just run it straight onto the beach and the engine would just rotate up as we hit the bottom!

Powerhouse Marine at Derwenthaugh marina are Yamaha agents. They should fix you up no problem. Saves messing around with the internet / second hand stuff / postage etc plus you get the right part. You will need the serial number of the engine and their microfiche system does the rest.
