price wise, the cost of fixed units has dropped dramatically. a fixed unit will give you a much bigger screen to look at, and makes getting chart cartridges less problematic. plus as its fixed, you've not got to worry about mounting the thing in a bracket

the handhelds are much better these days, and some do take cartridges, but they are fond of batteries, a good day out will eat 2 sets

you can get fixed ones with internal antennas that are pretty good these days as well, so fitting the thing becomes less of a problem, I bought a cobra plotter last year with an internal antenna and it works in the house and our walls are nigh on 3 foot thick stone

you can get a mono chartplotter for around £150 these days, I had a navman with internal antenna on the last boat and it worked fine, cost me £159.99 but have a look at

gael force chandlery marine superstore - Musto, Honda, Blakes, Raymarine, Navman, Plastimo, Internat

full colour lowrance plotter with a free chart cartridge for £299

    Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.
