  • one day maybe....?

    some pics from scarborough, 1954

now thats what you call a boat rod (ie a rod that looks like its made from the a mast of a boat)

the story goes, they were towed out in that boat by a bigger boat...

they only caught 4 fish, this one:

    and these ones

If the herring ever get a chance to recover wonder if we'll ever see them again, at todays prices there's probably 20 grand in them 4 fish

i went to a talk in with sam harris on this subject (big tuna) and he had some stories to tell. one time a man was towed out on of these small boats and caught a tuna he fought it for fourteen hours from his little boat.

sad but the story with these fish is that there was no market for them, they were hung in a shed for a bit, and people paid to see them then when they got a bit smelly they were dumped back at sea. One chippy tried to sell it but there were few takers

if it were me, don't think I'd be able to resist hacking a lump off there and then for some Sashimi!

Get your self west on the west coast, few charters offer tuna trips. Lad i know when on a blue shark trip and someone on the boat caught a 8lb tuna 2 years ago, i can not see the herring returing in great numbers...inface last year was the 1st year i never seen any shoals of great number since i started fishing 22 years ago.

something for Pansy maybe, We've maybe thought about taking her back up to the west coast of scotland next year, a days steaming max would put us right out there among them

As far as herring are concerned, the numbers are growing steadily, seeing more and more of them off the west coast, and one of my commerical pals up there is starting to land numbers of them regularly in season

just gotta hope they get to keep recovering before the russians or whoever come and hoover the lot up again.

lots of herring about I reckon can only be a good thing for the whole range of fish out there
