  • reel for shadding

Hi Guys, a skipper recently told me he favoured high gear ratio reels for shadding over low gear ratio reels. Apparently the faster retrive works the lures better.

What reels are people using? What are peoples thoughts?

I'm on a SLOSH30, TLD 10 or Charter special. This skipper reckonned the SLOSH 30 was the best to use as 6:1, shimanos are 4:1 ish.

I would say the slosh 20/30 are a good mid priced reel and would be ideal for shading.

I'm not sure there is an optimum shadding reel as there are a number of factors relative to your personal fishing style and/or tidal conditions that can influence the technique required "on the day" for shadding. For instance, the line retrieve per revoltion will vary commensurate with the reel gear ratio, the amount of line on the spool and the speed at which the reel handle is turned.
Furthermore, wind over tide or perhaps a strong Westerly will enhance the shad action with only a slow retreive while slack water or a very small tide will require a quicker retrieve.

I suppose everybody to there own but i like a slow retrieve reel but there are so many factors jigging shads usually outfishes winding 70% of the time cod at the moment tend to be tigher to the bottom so jigging the shad seems to work better.

Come summer cod tend to chase the feed more off the bottom so winding seems to be more affective there are a lot of different factors water clarity is massive when useing shads but jigging a shad the same as useing a pirk making sure your lead bounces the bottom will give you very good results if you fishing a very snaggy wreck winding saves on your tackle but on ground jigging the shad as for a good shadding reel the slosh reels after time the bearings go to something like penn squawl or daiwa saltist if your bying a 6.1 reel dont overfill the spool then your retrieve wont be as fast little tricks of the trade.

am no expert like, and may get shot down but,

instead of changing reel's, would it not be easier to change the way you wind/retrieve, for what you are using....!

                  only asking.

I have an avet and an abu 7001 , I don't think it makes much difference to the fish which one I use, but I love to use the avet because it feels so good, but on the other hand , the abu has automatic pick up on the retrieve, which makes life a whole lot simpler when winding up and dropping down
So I mostly use my snowbee deep blue
