usually i use feathers baited with mackerel/rag with a 10oz spinner on the end in the summer. however it is not summer so im wondering if i need a different setup for going out at this time of year?
What boat/port or you going from? what type of fishing rough ground or wrecks?
The last three trips squid, mackerel and crab have all caught fish but mackerel being the least best, we have caught fish on bait and unbaited lures, pirks and shads already but the water is very coloured again after a week of east winds so smelly baits will work best.
We have tried the wrecks and had fish off most of them but the ground is holding the most fish as per normal for this time of year.
Baited daylights, flowing baited traces and the odd shad and pirk will cover all your bases...its hit or miss still but alot of 1-3lb fish about if they are feeding the day you are out.
I am no expert from the boat, but I was out twice a week ago and tried multiple shads, rippers, hookais (baited and unbaited) and daylights with no success. Changed to plain hook with bait and pulled in a few, as did others. I dont think anyone had any fish at all on anything but baited plain hook.
If your out with an experieced skipper, he will usually know best

Were going from amble and i have no idea where the fishing will take place just hoping the skipper can land us on some fish
Ragworm always scores for us early on over the hard ground at amble, but it's like all fishing, one day you run out of bait in 20 minutes , the next you buy extra and can't get a bite
