I always found the action of the pirk made the biggest difference, some times there would be an older guy on the boat who would be getting fish all the time but his actions was just a slow lift and drop other times it was fast jigs other times it would be high up fast etc etc
And I see now that the soft rods and braid seem to be not so good for pirking as the rod bends like mad so the pirk hardly moves
Something to think about as I have had days out where my 50lb class rod gets bags of hook ups but I have ben snagged and started using the 20lb class which has a good tip action but using the same pirks stops getting hook ups the next drift back to the stiff rod and bingo hook ups again
if I dont get them with a fast movement then a slow movement with a softer rod sometimes works better
It is a guessing game lol

We fished with plain lead parks (courtesy of Keith)last year Chris fitted with 6/0 gummi's as opposed to trebles and found them just as effective as bright chromed lures. I think as has been mentioned it is the action of the pirk rather than the colour and for how long they last before getting snagged is it worth it?
Saying that if someone catches on a shiney one I know what I would be putting on next drift!

being an old pirker this interests me.
in another life i used to fish from the front of the boat(crew only).
nothing i liked better than casting in the direction of drift and letting pirk drop down, then starting to jig it just before it came to the boat, depending on speed of drift you could get 2--4 verticle jigs in before starting to drift away from pirk.
years ago when pirks were "king" i found this very productive
worth mentioning this was over ground not wrecks.
also years ago pirks only seemed to be silver, nowadays orange black plain lead all seem to do damage in different situations on different days.AUDENTES FORTUNA JUVAT

Plain lead pirks will catch just as many fish as any other colour, it's movement that attracts fish down there, not colours, I fish the lightest that will jig reasonably vertically and on the deepest wrecks heavy pirks to get them down quick and make the most of what might've a very short drift.
Shads are much the same , any colour will do , as long as it reminds the cod it's hungry_____________
