Boat Fishing for flatfish

Hi guys

in 2014 I want to try doing something different.

Has anybody here experience and success, with boat fishing for flatfish?

Locations, marks, methods, tides, seasons?

Would be cool to find some turbots, soles or halibuts !!!?

Used to get some canny plaice in the summer off the back of Tynemouth pier.
But that was about 15 year ago when i used to go out on me relations boat 'Sir Tristram'. He used to put the anchor down and target them. The boats i go on now don't target them, so not to sure.

Yeah we sometimes anchor behind Tynemouth pier, mainly get dabs and the odd plaice and gurnard.

Yeah, done it a couple of times, find some soft ground and look on the plotter for a trough and try and anchor over it...

plenty of flats to be had on the fine ground small hooks with beads and worm bait tipped off with fish bait . If you need a few pointers giz a shout

Sir Tristram?!?! Haha... Funny story... Was fishing at Hepburn marina with my dad maybe 15yrs ago, river was incredibly foggy.. Hear an engine and this boat pops up alongside the marina. "Funny question lads, where are we?!" Haha... Lads on board the sir Tristram!! Pointed em up river and of they went....

I had a guy who fished with me in summer festival around 15 years ago he came on board and said paul today i going to try and catch a big flatfish in those days there was a flatfish section in festival unfortunatly today there isnt .

The bait he loaded with was fresh herring fished on long trace i said we have been catching as many cod as you want he no its a big flatty ok go for it.

We went to an area off whitby around the 6 mile mark where the ground is a little more broken hard ground but patches of sand as well there was a lot of cod there at that time the lads throughout the day were pulling cod very steady swith cod upto 16 lb on pirks and hokias the guy with the fresh herring persisted he also got some nice cod on the herring but it was around 3 in the afternoon when all of sudden the guy on hering shouted he had a big fish on sure enough his rod was pulling right over i new this was a little different when the fish surfaced to my amiazment it was halibut i manged to gaff it and it abviously he cleaned up in the flatfish section in festival it was around 12lb if i remember right but it just goes to show persivere with good bait and you just never know.

To my knowledge he is the only man i know in these water to set his stall out try and get big a flatty and suceed he deserved that fish.
