Hope someone can offer some advice please?

I am now eventually seriously looking for my first fishing boat / Day boat and although I have been out on friends boats many times I have never been in charge. I have found some organisations offering power boat training to various levels beginner to intermediate such as at Derwenthaugh Sea Cadet Boat Station

Has anyone any experience of this type of course? Are they worth it?

I really don't want to just Wing it first time out and would feel far more confident with a bit of extra knowledge and experience under my belt.

While recently enquiring about a boat at Royal quays I was told they could take me out to show me the ropes. I am just wondering if this will be enough.

Just interested to hear some of your thoughts on learning boatmanship and safety?

How did you learn the craft?

    Appreciate any advice

    Hi Jonny,

Really pleased to hear that you are on your way to becoming a boat owner. I thoroughly recommend that you get some training under your belt. You will feel so much more confident. I took an RYA Powerboat Level 2 course at Royal Quays when I bought my first boat, despite having grown up with boats, and hired plenty, but they had all been on rivers or canals. The sea is different, and it requires respect. A course helps so much, and I got Oli to take one too.

That one is based in Amble, but there are plenty of others if you Google RYA Powerboat Level 2. You gain a certificate too that is handy if you ever hire boats abroad. It can help with insurance costs too.

    Cheers
    Adrian

Thanks Adrian That course at Amble is not too expensive and I would prefer to do it in a place I am more familiar with. Had a few family holidays on the Norfolk Broads and those boats were big , somehow managed those without incident although I did see many get into trouble crashing into dock and getting stuck in weed.

Hoping to find the right boat before spring giving me some time to get clued up. Can't wait to be able to go out when I want and fish where I want.

Might send the odd pm if that's ok? if I see something suitable, would really appreciate your opinion.

      Tight lines
