Sunderland Species

Had a morning at sunderland today collecting bait for next weekened. After I had filled the boot I went for a walk round the marina to allow the dog to dry out before we got back in the car.

A small trawler had docked at the side and they were filliting the mornings catch and I have to say I was amazed at the number of species they had, some of which were suspiciously small.

So to list the species and approx number.

Cod ...1 basket ...maybe 40 lb
Whiting (small...in fact tiny) 5 baskets
Whiting (decent size) 1 Basket
Prawns 1/2 basket
Langoustines 1 Basket

So that is the species I would expect...now the others.

Anglerfish 1
Turbot ...1
Sole...about a dozen and some good fish.
Spotted ray... 4
Plaice...about a dozen...some good fish amongst em.
Tiny wrasse...and I do mean small.
Squid...three.
Finally either orange roughy or red gurnard...they were small and my eyes are going.

And half a box of what was probably to become pot bait...tiny dabs about the size of a beer mat.

Sad to see so many undersize fished killed...but a good variety of species...and In my case an eye opener.

I can only assume since they had prawns on board (3 x 1/2 basket)that they were using prawn nets...and the other species were bycatch...about 10 baskets. I was very suprised to see cod being landed as I understood they were out of quota and I would not expect a boat to have a bycatch allowance left at the end of a month.

Its the NSFC meeting tomorrow...things to discuss as far as I am concerned.

I wonder how many of these fish species other anglers have caught as I was amazedat howmany there were on one boat who had obviously fished locally.

As you say dave nice on the species but bad on the amount of undersized fish..

I wont name the boat but 5 weeks ago i seen a prawn boat with a shoval off loading its catch just as it passed the piers, houdreds of gulls making the most of the hords of dead fish very sad

with all that imformation you have looked at or logged down very carefully and the sizes and amount lol.some folk will think you are a bailiff ,or are you lol

No I am not a bailiff, just a concerned angler who spent ten minutes watching them gut fish whilst the dog dried out enough to be allowed back in the car. I was more intrested in the variety of fish caught as I tend to try something different when I go out fishing rather than stick to the normal cod whiting and ling methods.

With regard to my thoughts that the cod quota was fullfilled it turns out I am totally wrong and the legislation is a minefield.

The boat in question is a member of "The Anglo Scottish Producer Organisation". This organisation still has quota left and as such can land cod whereas other boats have to put it all back if not members of such an organisation. A very confusing arrangement.

Now whats the best way to target spotted rays

The cod ban only applies to boats under 10 metres fishing in the north sea.

Listen lads - leave the trawlermen alone as they are makng a living from the sea and a tough living at that!!

I am a keen angler myself and have been dragged into thes discussions many a time. I also recollect the so called top anglers from the north east engaged in what can only be described as a bait masacre with no corny comments from the sheep or press. What about worms and crabs? What about one for the cat?? I suggest you take a long hard look at yourselves before you attack the commercial sector.

Please remember where you came from and support one of our most famous industries!!

5 year ban on all netting for fish and prawn, our fleet and every other fleet

Goverment to use some of the money they give to all the 100s that hide in containers every day and pay the fisherman 5 years worth of wages or buy the buisness out and help them get started again in some other trade.

In a perfect world that is what i want and it would work but i dout it will ever happen or work.

Plenty more fish in the sea..not for long.

What would be deemed a reality check? the difference between any trawler and the average shore or small boat fisherman is about 1000% in terms of catch sizes

Trawlers/netters are all about the money - everything else is inconsequential, or so it seems...no one denies what they do is hard work, but what people do question is whether these businessmen are as discerning when it comes to conservation...I have a feeling it is seen more as a dent in their profits than a worthwhile endeavour

What I put in my boot was a bucket full of mussels that were hand picked without harming anything.

This post was not having a go at commercials it was about the variety of fish they had caught. I have no doubts that the fish landed were within the legal limits and in quota.

What about that boat (gypsy something) dropping his nets 300 yards off the heugh. You don,t see that at the Derwent resevoir.
No wonder i have days and days of catching nowt when the pier is surrounded by nets.
