for the price mate you can't really go wrong...if you get into it more seriously, maybe then consider upgrading at a later stage.

Baited Royd traces and baited daylites seem to do the trick with cod and ling - although if you want to try for a specimen you can make up some traces with larger hooks for larger baits

I sound like an expert - I'm not really (have only been out twice )...but as some of the experienced lads will tell you there's no apparent secret to it...at least that's what they'll tell you anyway

I think you got a bargain m8 and those outfits will do fine to begin with but like Wallsendo says you'll prob want to upgrade if you get into it, good luck

                      Coco,

                      I,m a returnee to fishing.
A lots changed as i used to go out over 30 years ago when i was a lad.
Someone on the forum said something which sticks in my head.
                      KEEP IT STRONG
                      KEEP IT SIMPLE
                      KEEP IT CHEAP.
I was tempted to buy all the latest top notch gear. But you don,t need to.
Get yourself out on the trip with what you have. 30 lb is fine.
Give it a whirl and see how it goes and talk to the other lads. Braid is good but its expensive. You can get this later if you want.
I like orange. Orange muppets. Orange jigs etc.But i also use jigs which cost £1.50 each from the tackle shop in Annfield Plain. These are chrome.
I,ve only been out on a boat three times since my return. So i am no expert either.

                      Cheers Mick.
                      Cheers Mick
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

You need to keep warm and dry or your trips out will be miserable. You don't "need" a flotation suit to fish on a charter boat but always have a waterproof available even on the finest of mornings cos if you get wet you stay wet. Dont forget your feet either! One of the first things you will notice when you head out between the piers is how quickly the tempreture changes

You can take gear off if you're warm but you cant put it on if you haven't got it with you. Go prepared

Have to agree with that...on the last trip with Norman and Steve the weather was inclement to say the least. I put my waterproof on far too late...by that point my fleece was already soaked, and the cold wouldn't go away...it saps your enthusiasm and withers your morale...I'd do it all again tho in an instant

Hi cocomonkey, Looks like there are a few of us all in the same boat (is that a pun?) in that we are new to boat fishing , in the sea at least! I've only been out a couple of times too , but from those experiences the advice I would give about lead weights is ........TAKE A LOT!!! First time out I seriously thought we were going to run out of either weights or rigs ... or both . Rough ground eats them up faster than any cod or ling will!
Take a good assortment of sizes too , when the tide starts running you need a heavier weight than when it's slack to get the hooks down where the fish are. (second time out the boat went about 5kts slower with all the lead we were carrying )
One other thing I learned , keep hold of your rod I took 2 rods with me second trip , one set up for mackerel , I laid it against the sideof the boat for a second whilst I did something else and next thing I knew it was away to Davy Jones locker complete with abu multiplier , braid , lead and rig .
Other than that ..... enjoy youself
