A friend of mine has just bought his first boat, had it checked out by the rnli, fitted with all all the electrics and is now ready to go!Weather permitting we are going to get out from Cullercoats over the weekend, could anyone reccomend which admiralty charts we should buy and where we can get them?We will just be pottering about around st marys/briardene initially.
    Thanks in advance!

The charts can be bought at most chandlers, Storrar marine on the Coast Road, at the traffic lights on the junction of Benfield Road have a good selection, The Imray chart you will need is the C 24. Flamborough Head to Fife Ness.

Just had a thought, although the Imray chart I have has a admiral on the front of it, is this a admiralty chart or a Imray chart or are they both the same?.

Marc , the imray charts are different to the admiralty charts . The admiralty charts have lots of info on them and that\'s what I use personally . I get mine from Lilly and Gilley at North Shields , next to Frazers landing . There are two charts , one from about Tees to Blyth and one from Tyne to the Farnes . They both overlap the Tyne area , depends how far your travelling really .

Marc, even the admiralty charts don\'t have ferries marked on them. And before you ask, yes I am :P

try this site crack-off, http://www.chartsales.co.uk/system/index.html i bought a couple of cancelled charts from this site for only £2.60 each to practice on while i was on a chart plotting and navigation course, you can also buy second hand charts and save a bit of cash. if you use admiralty charts i suggest you buy chart 5011, symbols and abbreviations, which tells you what all the little letters and numbers mean on your charts.
