Got a letter from Sunderland Marina (where my boat is moored) today outlining their plans to relay the chain moorings and create 34 more pontoon moorings which will have an overall affect of reducing the chain moorings by 3.

I am not quite sure of the impact that this will have on the boat owners in the marina as this is my first year at the marina. But one thing you can be sure of is someone is going to have to pay for this work and I wonder who that will be?

First of all I think some chain moorers will convert to the new nicer walk-on moorings near the wall...however, it will be a matter of price.

If you guesstimate them at 1000£/a each and they sell out, it brings an extra of 30.000£ per year.

I wished they would invest in a petrol pump as well...sick of carrying fuel.

Do you really think that many boat owners on the chains will convert? There are plenty of pontoons available now but no takers.

I would go on the pontoons tomorrow if it wasn't for the price. I currently pay over £800 on the chains but would cost me another £1000 to go on a pontoon. I simply can't justify the additional cost.

I can only hope that with the changes comes a new pricing structure which doesn't jump from 18 foot boats to 24 foot boats which is cost terms is £1100 - £1800.
