  • What Makes A Good Boat Angler ?

I have had this topic raised a few times because in the words of any shore angler "anyone can catch fish off the boat!!" All you have to do is drop your line over the side there is no skill involved at all its easy !
    Boat ?
    Skipper?
    Bait?
    Weather?
    Location ?
    Knowl how?
The best tackle you can buy?
or where your finger`s were last night?
    etc
or is it all luck ? just ask Eddie
    Cheers Bert

      Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.

            Hahahaha nice one Keith.

Apart from last year (one trip) I had not been on a boat for a long time, I think it is always good to ask questions of the skipper, on the boat you are on as most of the time the skipper is the man that can give you the best advice on what has been catching. After that you have to trust his judgement and skill for putting you over the mark.

I have been out with some great skippers and some that were only after your money, the good ones are worth their weight in gold.

            Jim.
Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.

i would say a good skipper is 75% of it .
lure and weight choice depending on water colour and strength of tide.
bait choice depending on time of year.
lure action and depth fished all come into it.
ability to free a fast hold while using braid without slicing your arms off !

Good point that mick, that Eddie seems to hammer the cod on pirks, while others don't get a sniff, he must practice his wrist action a lot.
                    Cheers, Keith.

Well that bit of tiger cack certainly did the job Keith ! because i remember a certain PB getting beaten a few hrs later !
It get me a little Hot under the collar when people say boat fishing is easy ! its all the above things and you also need to be patient esp if you are waiting for your first double fig !!
I was spoilt as a kid in the boat fishing department because i was in the South Shields Boat Angling Club and there was never a shortage of boats who would take me out fishing every week !And each skipper had his own speciality of certain species, and being young a very keen to learn from the "Old Timers" nudge nudge say no more when is that species comp again ?
                        Cheers Bert

kieth ive done all my boat fishing from whitby this year and every single time ive been out , the skippers have wiped the floor with everyone on the boat using nothing but the humble pirk.
ive learnt a lot with these lads.

there was a group of lads from sheffield on the other day just after that northerly we had and they were moaning about catching next to nothing ,their comments seemed to be unfairly directed at the skipper who was up on the bow pulling them up 1 after another using a pirk.
their tactics were to cram as many different baits on a string of hokkies as possible even though they were told to do away with the bait.they wouldnt listen !
result - skipper 1 x box of cod
sheffield lads - a few small ling between them.

Oh yes!! obviously the cack didn't position the boat over the fish, so thanks again mate

That sounds familiar, best advice of all, copy what the skipper's doing.
