CAn I have your honest opinion of a sea hog trooper?

Thinking of getting one April next year, the plan was to birth the boat at the R.Q from May until September than tow it home and keep it in my garden the rest of the time.

What I am after knowing is.....

What is it like in the North Sea in a modest sea?

How reliable is the engine you get with it?

Is it easy to fit add on's etc fish finder?

What mpg do you get going at cruising speed?

How easy is it to load and unload from a trailer?

I am sure I will think of a few more...

How easy is it to load and unload from a trailer? I've often wondered about this, if you launch from say Cullercoats on your own do you just beach the boat while you park your trailer up?

pretty stable in a modest sea, but try go too fast and it gonna slam a bit, economy is as kieth says entirely down to the motor, a good modern 4 stroke will be pretty economical, and older 2 stroke, not so. Also depends how you drive it. half revs to full revs might only add a few knots to the top speed, but fuel consumption will go up massively, not much of a comparison, but I've a 16foot delmar in the garden, same hull as a the seahog, with a 50hp mariner 4 stroke on the back, crusing at 12-15knots I can get the best part of 10mpg. running at 25knots I get less than 2 mpg

loading/unloading is as much to do with the trailer andf the slip as anything. a nice new bramber/hallmark/indespension trailer with loads of rollers on a good sheltered slip will be a doddle,

run it off a beach with a bit of a swell and it could be a nightmare - same for any boat. you can chuck it off cullercoats beach single handedly, but only really on a rising tide or slack water. On a falling tide, by the time youe parked the trailer its likley to be so far out of the water as to be unmovable. I've done it on a rising tide, dropped the boat off a little shallower than normal, so its sitting on the sand a bit, and chucked the anchor in the sand, parked the trailer and car and by the time I've got back its floating enough to shove off. Either way its still better to have someone that can hold the boat off while you park up

i have had my trooper for almost 5 years now and i think it's a great boat, because it's a semi cathedral hull it is very stable and has much more leeway for balancing , in fact my crew can walk about getting gear ready while under way, the freeboard is second to none, i have to stand on my tippy toes to pish over the side and i'm 6'1"

slams a bit if you push it, but them so do all small boats of any hull design

How reliable is the engine you get with it?
i have a 1998 mariner 60hp bigfoot 2 stroke, very reliable, well never let me down yet (touch wood)

Is it easy to fit add on's etc fish finder?
plenty space on the steering console for a nav and sounder, i have my radio screwed to the cuddy ceiling.

What mpg do you get going at cruising speed?
with my 60 i get average 4-5mpg, if conditions allow i cruise at 27mph, probably get more at lower revs

How easy is it to load and unload from a trailer?
piece of pish on most surfaces with a rollercoaster trailer, i use a toyota landcruiser and launch from beaches and slips with no problems, stick to slips with a normal car

you're right, i have a board made to fit over the engine well and we use a disposable BBQ in nice weather, i also take my own personal chef, but thats another matter ;o)

yes, we'll get that trip sometime soon, you need to retire so we can get out midweek when the weather is generally better....lol

tricks are fine, caught my first tope of the year last friday, on hokeyes baited with a strip of launce fishing for cod....lol

I still worry about les and his onboard chef...we fished downwind of him last year and the smell was great ...but then he posts pictures of fish with bits missing??

Mark ...I have a delmar and have never seen another anywhere..the hull design is nowhere near les's boat pic.Perhaps I have an older model. Mine is a planing hull not a cathedral hull.

Economy with a 65hp 2t suzy on the back ...dont ask ...top speed is good though

As for launching if you get a good roller trailer this should not be a problem in most circumstances. I bought a new indespension rollercoaster3 last year for 1200 quid and have not had any problems launching in shallow water or even up a 12" drop at hartlepool marina slipway. Its the trailer design that affects the launch and recovery far more than the type of boat. Onepoint to bear in mind is if you intend to travel a lot to fish check the cost of bearings for the trailer. My old one was costing me 95 quid for a set of bearings which is why i changed to the indespension one with bearing seals. Brake and bearing replacement was costing over 400 quid a year but I do travel long distances at times.

only thought that as someone told me thtas what it was. Only delmars I've seen have hulls a bit like warriors

bought it of Glen a couple of months back to take up to scotland, stuck a 4stroke mariner big foot on the back since I took the pics (In the Roston Vasey Marina). The hull is very seahog, I thought maybe SeaJeep with a different cuddy, but this chap was adamant it was a delmar:
