  • New Outboard

Started my new outboard today (25hp Mariner) Had a right job to get it started and when it did it was'nt as smooth as i would have liked. Is this normal until I run it in proper. I would presume that with it have the fuel through for the first time and the bits inside wearing in it would run better after a run in. Anyone had the same or know of this.

Hopefuly be giving it a run in on friday out of Amble weather permitting and a bit fish if possible.
Had a walk along Amble pier last sat saw a orkney going out that had to stop for these lads to wind there lines in, what a carry on. Also saw a lad in a little inflatable get his outboard prop snagged up in a bouy line.
    Quite an eventful stroll.......

    Regards..............

No George not normal for a brand new engine, should start no bother, are you sure you have the run in mix correct, and make sure you are getting enough fule through with the bulb, if you still have probs get back onto where you bought it

Got the run in mix at 4% by the manual and the bulb was full. just thinking it was sounding like it was back firing and running a bit quick. think it could air pockets goimg through only ran it for about a minute at a time. will ring the supplier up and give it a proper run in on friday see what happens.

      Thanks for the reply..

        hi george
the orkney you seen having to stop was me and Alan a relative.
They must have seen us approaching but didn't even attempt to reel in.
Alan's just put the boat in the marina over the easter. Have you any advice on where we need to be fishing I.E any rough ground marks, should we be going north, south, back of the island etc?

        cheers chris

          hello chris

been up at amble for a few years now , genrally at this time of year south is best up until end of May begining of june when north seems to fish better, back of coquet island to druridge bay is usually good for codling coalies etc.
overall IMO north seems to produce the better quality fish but its more of a trek.

think we're going out this weekend, so think we'll head out towards the back of the island.
            we can only try!

              Hello

More often than not the lads usualy wind in for you. I wouldnt care they casting right over to the far bank.

When I can get out I usualy fish the other side of the island, east side. The depth drops off at a certain distance. Had some good days just pottering around the island.

It must be quite exspensive berthing at the marina if you can tow its much cheaper trying to join the Amble boat club and launching from there slip.

I'm hopefuly out Frid if the engine plays ball. usualy get out through the week due to my shifts but I'll keep an eye out.

Read the manual again and noticed the primer pull knob (best I can describe it) was twist round which has the same effect I think as the choke. this could have been the problem, tried running it today but sods law water pressure had dropped in the village, I use the outboards muffs. Going out friday for a play with it should be Ok now I think. If not after friday will be ringing.
I've got my trusty Ailsa craig 4hp to back me up !
Seems a good forcast tommorow might find time for a fish as well.......

Went out today about 1pm and according to the met office inshore it was going to be smooth to calm. I would hate to see rough if it was what they said. Canny lumpy......

Anyway launched at the amble boat club with an audience wich added to the pressure got the boat in engine started no probs. engine ran great but still fast on tick over as me mate found out as I put it in forward of like wippet ! so I've adjusted that and it seems much better. Good test for the boat and engine today not many folk out. Managed 3 drifts south of coquet caught 4 fish 3 cod 1 whiting nowt spectacular but still it was summit. couldnt get east of the island due to the conditions. Didnt manage any pics as we were chucked about a bit and me mate lost his dinner over the side.

Cant wait for a lovey calm summers day ahhhhhh.................

Nice one George, well done mate. I used to keep my previous boat at amble marina so know the ground a little. Biggest fish were always just outside the island theres a gully just to the north east about 400 yds off the island level with northern most point, always fished well. Other favourite spot was about same distance east of Island but level wit southernmost point where the shelf drops off steeply.

Good look mate , look forward to the reports (Glad to hear the engines looking ok now)

Well done George. There is nothing worse than an audience for a first time launch. Having said that try a trip to to windemere or some other busy public slipway on a bank holiday monday to watch others launch and its hard to beat for entertainment value if only to watch peoples attempts to reverse down a slipway. I regularly launch at seaton sluice which has to be one of the worst launches in the NE if not the country in terms of the reversing round a 270 degree bend. One that is best tackled around dawn before anyone is up and about.

Is the slipway at Amble a public launch or members only? Any contact details would be appreciated.

If any forum member finds your mates lost dinner I am sure they will return it because on the whole the forum members are an honest bunch. Or perhaps it may be better if they just hit the MOB button and posted the location so he could go and get it back himself.

had hours of hillarious entertainment watching people launching at Cullercoats, you can laugh at these people as no doubt when i started others laughed at me.

                              Cheers lads.....

Just to answer Davem2005 there is a public slip about 400m down river from the boat club but your very limited tide wise and there is an awful lot of mud at the bottom. the boat club one is good for all states I will PM you with the details.
Thanks for the hot spots norman should be out to them soon hopefuly.

As for me mates dinner I think it was best left to the gulls !
