  • 3D Fishfinder any good?

I have seen a Humminbird matrix 47 3D fishfinder on a well known action site for around £250 mark (when ordered from usa)
it looks really good, but is it just a gimmic?

i just cant find any reviews from actual owners of this unit.
i want to know if you can actually make out struture on the sea floor in 3d mode (its only good for 240ft in 3D mode and i suspect thats in fresh waters)

im not that bothered about seeing fish, but a good picture of the bottom would be nice!

anyone seen anything like one of these in action?

they are good, but work best when tied in with bathymetric charts on a chartplotter (maxsea)
the down side of that is... they're oooh very very expensive!

not sure that on there own you'd gain a huge amount over a decent dual been '2d' sounder

I always think the word fishfinder' is a bit misleading, as most of what we target are bottom dwellers, and generally get lost among the noise and clutter that is bouncing back to a sounder.

personally I'd get to know a normal sounder, and how to interpret the display and you'll have more luck than with a 3d sounder, mainly because on a 3d sounder the difference between say kelp bed and general contours is not as easy to make out but a good 2d sounder makes it fairly obvious

will post some bathmetric pics later!

forgot to mention it also has 2D mode upto 1000ft and also has 2D/3D mode together to show the differance.

the 2d and 3d combined is quite nice, the 2d certainly picks out the bottom structure more.

could fancy one having seen that but just bought a new colour sounder last week

email them and get them to put 'gift' on the shiiping label, they'll usually oblige and it reduces the chance of getting stung for VAT when it arrives, works for me anyway
