BLYTH SEA ANGLING CLUB

  • by

Blyth sea angling club is one of the oldest clubs in the area formally known as Newsham and New Deleval club. The club was started back in the 1960s when local anglers who normally fished the local pier decided to start the club and organised competitions on the pier. The club steadily grew where in the 1970s and 1980s the club boasted over 50 members. In recent years the membership has dwindled probably due to other clubs starting in the area and dwindling fish stocks. Current membership normally ranges between 15 and 20 members which makes it a friendly social club.

The club has many recognised local anglers with years of experience who are more than willing to share there knowledge of the local area these include former PENN sea league finalist and winner Dave Maddison who is currently assisting a new angler this year who has just joined the club.

The clubs year is broken down into 2 separate leagues the winter league and the summer league. the format of these two leagues are as follows.

WINTER LEAGUE

The winter league normally starts in September and runs until early March. The boundaries are from the Tyne up to amble which gives the angler every opportunity to catch fish. In total there are 25 competitions which are broken down into 4 legs of 6 competitions and a Christmas fayre. The club champion is the person who weighs the most in over the 25 competitions. In order to keep interest throughout the year other prizes and trophies are up for grabs these include the following. trophies for “leg” winners, specimen fish, heaviest fish, heaviest bag, leisure fish (fish caught out of competition). A singles and doubles knockout competition is also ran during the latter part of the season which normally keeps the interest and banter going during the latter part of the season.

The club holds an open competition during March which is a open match in memory of Dave Jobson the previous chairman who suddenly and unexpectedly died 10 years ago. This open now attracts up to and over 100 anglers and is kindly supported by Ian Woods Game fishing supplies of Morpeth.

During late April early May the club holds its annual presentation at The Ridley Park Hotel.

The club holds an “awaytrip” which is normally a long weekend staying in a caravan or log cabin in the south west of Scotland fishing mainly with light spinning gear for Pollock and Wrasse with fish caught last year to 7lb 8oz and bigger lost the sport is unreal. During the weekend a catch and release competition is held and scoring is on a point system only. The social side of this weekend is tremendous with an opportunity to sample local ale and barbecue on the local beach.

SUMMER LEAGUE

The summer league is held between June and August with 6 competitions organised including an optional sweep. The competitions are fished from Seahouses down to the Tyne which includes the best summer cod marks in the country. Again the members who fish this a more than willing to take new or inexperienced anglers along to show them the ropes. This league is a great league to start rock fishing as all competitions are fished during the day.

Meetings are held every last Tuesday at The Ridley Park Hotel starting around 8pm the weigh in are also held at the pub which gives a nice sheltered warm place to weigh in the winter. Fees are normally £20 per year with an optional £2 sweep per match.

New members are also welcome to this friendly club. The Chairman Gordon Cavnor can be contacted on 01670 352590 for further information.
